A bit of lore actually: Sonic characters aren't meant to have those 3 toes, or any! It's often just this bean pad, or some uni-toe, rather, as seen in offical sonic artwork that has the characters wearing sandals (Big is a major example, but Tails has been seen with the same uni-toe).
