There are some units that upgrade and units that don't, those that don't will stay until late game. There's 2 options to fix this, you can either remove them from the roster/game or make new units to be an upgrade to them.
Or maybe it needs a complex script to disband them once the game reaches # turns.
AI is researching technologies because their armies and garrisons contain units of the 15th century, but at the same time armies contain units of the 14th and 15th centuries. Units of the past centuries are not disabled, as it is, for example, done in DeI for R2TW...
Damn, i never reached the 15th century to see that, always finished my campaigns way earlier...
That's probably caused by the AI being late in technology, maybe if you give them a research buff it will fix.
