The Battle of Salla was a major conflict that took place during the Winter War between the Soviet Union and Finland from December 1939 to March 1940. The battle was fought in the Salla region of northern Finland, near the border with the Soviet Union.

The Soviet Union launched a major offensive in the region in an attempt to capture the city of Petsamo, which was an important port on the Arctic Ocean. The Finnish forces, led by General Hjalmar Siilasvuo, were heavily outnumbered and outgunned, with only around 9,000 troops and a few tanks and artillery pieces.

Despite being outnumbered, the Finnish forces were well-prepared for the Soviet offensive. They had constructed a network of defensive positions and fortifications, including trenches, bunkers, and obstacles. The Finnish troops were also highly motivated and well-trained, with a deep commitment to defending their homeland.

The battle began on December 6, 1939, when the Soviet forces launched a massive assault on the Finnish positions in the Salla region. The Finnish troops put up a fierce resistance, using their defensive positions to hold back the Soviet advance. The Finnish artillery and tanks also played a crucial role in the battle, inflicting heavy losses on the Soviet forces.

Over the course of the next few months, the battle raged on with neither side gaining a clear advantage. The Finnish troops, however, were able to hold their ground and prevent the Soviet forces from advancing further into Finland. The harsh winter conditions, with temperatures dropping as low as -40°C, also took a heavy toll on both sides.

By March 1940, the Soviet Union had realized that they were unlikely to achieve a decisive victory in the Salla region. They decided to end their offensive and focus on other parts of the front. The Battle of Salla had been a costly and bloody conflict, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, the Finnish troops had successfully defended their homeland and prevented the Soviet Union from achieving their objectives in the region.
