After looking at a few probably legit Boshin War art on google.com and surfing through 2 wikipedia pages I have decided to modify ValerBoss' Bayonet Mod so that:
- Black Tortoise Force and Azure Dragon Force retain their katanas (many of them are some form of samurai, also traditionalism)
- All Bear Infantry retain their katanas (check the third image)
- Kiheitai retain their katanas (check first image)



Yes, if you have both the original mod and this on it will either make no changes or the game thinks you screwed up and remove bayonets entirely until you reinstall all mods by clicking on ModManager

Yes, units without bayonets are moderately more vulnerable to cavalry charges.

sidenote: a lot of the google images depict even line infantry holstering sidearm katanas, not sure what to think about that considering i thought they were all supposed to have bayonets

Something interesting that I've noticed myself from period pictures is that you *always* see rifles with bayonets on, however, there is no sheath for the bayonet on the belt. There was one drawing I found that had vague shapes that might have been sheathes, and I've seen one drawing were a soldier is in camp and doesn't have their bayonet on their rifle. Every other picture I've seen though, the soldiers all have bayonets on their rifles, and I see no sheath for them. This has made me suspect that the Japanese might have just left the bayonets on the rifle at all times. They might take it off at camp and perform maintenance on it just like they would their rifle, but the bayonet might have been permanently fixed to the rifle in all other situations.

About what you said about a lot of period photos depicted even line infantry katanas, I found this really interesting too. I think officers would also wear a wakazashi along with their katana, just based off of looking at period drawings. My theory is that it stems from the culture of Japan at the time. A sword was a status symbol that meant you were a warrior, from my understanding.

Great version of the bayonet mod that adds yet another aspect to the modern vs. traditional aspect of the game, very nice!

@Pizzaguy Unfortunately I have no idea how to do this.
But there is my tactics and uniforms mod that allows you to put line infantry in square formation which trade firepower for protection agaisnt cav, but even with this they may still break formation unless you have merged 2 units together so they share the impact of the charge.

still though I find infantry still break almost instantly when faced against cavalry. is it possible to make a mod for the game where cavalry dont knock down line infantry causing them to instantly route?

in theory it makes sense, the bayonet could be retained for use against cavalry (as a spear) and the katana for fighting against infantry

Could you make it so the quiver and sheath mod be compatible with the mod?
