RENFE Rail Crossings 2.0

Since the first decades of the railway in Spain, the way to signal a level crossing was the signal in the shape of a cross, painted in black and white (called the cross of San Andres at that time). Over time, this primitive signal evolved, being labeled and doubling the number of blades for crossings with more than one track. These black and white signals remained in use until well into the 1970s, when they were being replaced by the red and white signals (European type), which remain to this day.
As for barriers, the classic way used in Spain was the chain with red discs. This chain was hung by the guard when the train approached, to close the traffic. As for mechanized barriers, they did not begin to be implemented until the 1920s, mainly in the vicinity of large cities and on busy lines of the MZA and NORTH. These barriers from the 20s and 30s were the basis of the unified model that RENFE implemented around 1950, much more simplified.
These original barriers, still made of a round tube, were replaced by the modern model that remains to this day, made of a square tube, and with the capacity to be fully automatic. This model remains in use with hardly any aesthetic changes for more than 50 years, with different variants of barriers and semi-barriers.
