Jubilee-Class Liner

Here is the Jubilee-Class liners of the White Star Line.

They were built as combined passenger and cargo liners for White Star Line's Australia routes. 5 ships were built in 1899, SS Afric, SS Medic, SS Persic, and 2 modified ships in 1901, the SS Runic and SS Suevic. Afric served during the Boer War as a troopship and continued a regular, uneventful civilian service afterwards. During WW1, she was used as a troopship by the Australian Government, and was later torpedoed and sunk in 1917 by the SM UC-66 in the English Channel. During Medic's service with the company, she had 2 notable officers onboard in her early years, William Murdoch and Charles Lightoller (who would later be officers onboard the RMS Titanic during her sinking). She served during the Boer War and WW1 as a troopship, and was later sold in 1928 as the whaling ship Hektoria. That same year, members of the Wilkins-Hearst Antarctic Expedition boarded the ship for the goal to be to explore Antarctica from air for the first time. Several flights were made over the region, and a glacier in the Antarctic Peninsula was named named after the ship, the Hektoria Glacier. During the WW2, she was used as an oil tanker, and was sunk in 1942 by the submarines U-211 and U-608 while sailing in convoy ON 127 with only one person killed in the sinking. Persic upon entering service was used as a troopship during the Boer War. 2 notable events in her career were in 1899 during the Boer War when her rudder broke, and when she recused survivors from the steamer Maudra which caught fire. In WW1, she was used as a troopship by the Australian Government like her early sisters. She continued civilian service until 1927 when she was sold for scrap. Runic's career was also uneventful, assisting the RMS Dunottar Castle after her engines broke down. In WW1, she served as an Australian troopship, and only suffered one collision with the collier Horst Marini, with 0 deaths on both ships. In 1930, she was sold off to a Norwegian company and converted into a whaling ship. She was renamed New Sevilla, and in 1940 while sailing to Antarctica in a convoy, was torpedoed and sunk by U-138 with only 2 deaths. Suevic had an uneventful career until 1907 when she ran aground off Cornwall. In order to free the ship, the salvagers closed her watertight doors, blew off the bow with explosives, and towed the remaining half of the ship back to Southampton. She was rebuilt with a new bow in 1908 and continued service, becoming the largest ship-rebuilding operation at the time. She served in WW1 as an Australian troopship, and was sold in 1928 to Norway as the whaling ship Skytteren. In 1942 during WW2, she was scuttled by her crew off Måseskär, Sweden after an unsuccessful attempt to escape from German ships, with only 1 person being killed.
