Radiation can be explained very simply like this, with Uranium for an example;
The Uranium atom is extremely dense. It has the atomic composition of 92 protons, and 92 electrons. Uranium is one of the heaviest materials on earth because of this. Now, the amount of subatomic particles contained inside of the atom cause the atom to be *unstable*. Unstable means that some particles, due to being packed tightly together, are ejected at rapid speeds. These ejected particles are radiation. The radiation that is usually depicted is Gamma radiation. This radiation moves at the speed of light.
Now, since these tiny particles move so fast, They can make contact with a plant or animal's DNA. This destroys the DNA, and this is what causes the mutations, as the DNA instructs your skin for example, to shed and regrow all the time. If the DNA is destroyed, your skin could shed and not regrow.
