Corregidor, Philippines [Map]

Corregidor is an island located at the entrance of Manila Bay in the southwestern part of Luzon in the Philippines, and is considered part of the Province of Cavite. Due to this location, Corregidor has historically been fortified with coastal artillery batteries to defend the entrance of Manila Bay and Manila itself from attacks by enemy warships. Located 48 kilometres (30 mi) inland, Manila is the nation's largest city and has been the most important seaport in the Philippines for centuries, from the colonial rule of Spain, Japan, and the United States, up through the establishment of the Third Philippine Republic in 1946.

Corregidor is the largest of the islands that formed the harbor defenses of Manila Bay, together with El Fraile Island (Fort Drum), Caballo Island (Fort Hughes), and Carabao Island (Fort Frank), which were all fortified during the American colonial period. The island was also the site of a small military airfield, as part of the defense.

During World War II, Corregidor played an important role during the invasion and liberation of the Philippines from the Imperial Japanese Army. The island was heavily bombarded during the later part of the war, where the ruins serve as a military memorial to American, Filipino, and Japanese soldiers who served and lost their lives on the battlefield. Corregidor is one of the most important historic and tourist sites in the country.

This map was created using a real gps height-map and utilizes historical battle and geographical maps to place buildings, roads, defensive positions, trees, rocks, and terrain texture. The map also includes the small neighboring island of Caballo, although it is obviously not accessible by foot from Corregidor. I meant for this map to resemble Corregidor in the early war (1942) instead of end of war period (around 1945), which is why it is not completely damaged yet as it would have been later on. There are still significant amounts of bomb craters and signs of minor destruction, because I want to use this map for a "First Battle of Corregidor" map, when the Japanese besieged and captured the island on May 6, 1942.
