Battle of Shumshu [Mission]

The Battle of Shumshu, the Soviet invasion of Shumshu in the Kuril Islands, was the first stage of the Soviet Union's Invasion of the Kuril Islands in August–September 1945 during World War II. It took place from 18 to 23 August 1945, and was the only major battle of the Soviet campaign in the Kuril Islands and one of the last battles of the war. The Soviet Union continued combat operations against Japan until early September 1945. Combat operations ended with the surrender of the surviving members of the Japanese garrison.

The Imperial Japanese army’s 91st Division, under the command of Lieutenant General Tsutsumi Fusaki, garrisoned Shumshu with about 8,500 men. Nearby island garrisons were able to reinforce each other if necessary. The Japanese strength also included 77 tanks. Against this force, the Soviets were able to field two reinforced army infantry divisions and one naval infantry battalion with a combined total of 8,824 officers and men and a naval task force of 64 small ships and craft to carry them to Shumshu. The Soviets had no tanks and no major warships with which to support the operation. This was one of the only battles of WW2 where Soviets had higher casualties than the Japanese when against them. This was because the Soviets were forced to do a naval landing and went up against tanks using only infantry.

This map was created using a gps height-map scan of the real Shumshu island. It features accurately placed roads, nature, buildings, and other props based on gps images as well as Japanese and Russian WW2 maps. I also used these battle maps to accurately place objectives and enemy/allied lines.
