Pacific Electric 1000 Series

The Pacific Electric Railway Company was created in 1901, as a means to connect the growing city of Los Angeles with various towns and locations nearby. By 1920 it was the largest electric railway system in the world, boasting nearly 1,100 miles of track, along which both freight and passenger service was provided.

These cars represent some of the most famous of Pacific Electric's fleet, the 1000 series of cars, or known commonly as the "Tens". They were constructed in 1913 by the Jewett Car Company of Ohio, originally unpowered, but later motorized. These big wooden cars were designed to transport large quantities between the busy city center, and the various enclaves served by the railroad. They feature two compartments, a small smoking section, which featured 14 reversible wooden-slat seats, and a non-smoking section, which featured 18 reversible plush seats. The car could seat a total of 64 passengers, with room for even more to stand.
