A modernized Kalashnikov assault rifle of 7.62x39 mm caliber, put into service in 1959 to replace the AK assault rifle. The main differences from the AK: an increased effective range, less weight, a new buttstock, a slower trigger response, an installed muzzle compensator and other design changes aimed at improving the efficiency of the machine.
