Tehachapi Loop

This is a diorama of Tehachapi Loop and the surrounding area, from Keene up to Cable, which is just West of the town of Tehachapi. The spiral is on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision through Tehachapi Pass and connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to the Mojave Desert. Total elevation gain would be over 1100 ft, with 77 ft of that being the loop itself.

The line averages about 36 freight trains a day. The loop itself is 3800ft long, so any train longer than that passes over itself, requiring the equivalent of approximately fifty-six 60 ft box cars. In this diorama it’s slightly smaller.

Please note that there are no wind turbines near the loop itself, but the Tehachapis are home to approximately 3400 wind turbines that produce 710 megawatts. They are included as a way of bringing more of the local flavor to the diorama.

At the bottom of the grade displayed is the small town of Keene, California. With a population of over 400 people, Keene is the home to the United Farm Workers organization, founded by Cesar Chavez. Keene is also his final resting place.
