Last recorded leaving for Tahiti in February of 1942, this submarine was originally scuttled by Allied sympathizers in a fishing trauler after sending out a message explaining that vichy crew members had taken control of the sub and were planning to surrender the submarine to Vichy France. It was later covered up by the Allies, and was passed off as sunk by friendly fire after a collision with the SS Thomas Lykes destroyed the comms array.
