Planet Ortelius is home to a single continent with a large central lake. Temperature gets cooler the further north you go with a hotter region in the south. The more north you get the more rough the land becomes with some areas becoming difficult to traverse with ground vehicles.

Ores are placed in dedicated veins to create a sense of ownership and scarcity for players. Factions may choose to monopolise, trade, or share these contested areas how they wish. In terms of placement, the higher the tier the ore is the more central it is around the lake with only a few in the west-east mountain range that splits north and south biomes. These add up to a contestable high friction play through on multiplayer or with friends.

A single continent allows all factions, players, activity, and combat to be close and personal. On Ortelius there's no option to be hidden or ignored. This in combination with a territory claims system, as seen on Gemini Sector, creates a unique experience for Space Engineer players to diversify their reasoning for fighting, trading, and teaming up.

Ortelius is also home to a small disconnected road network between areas of high predicted player activity; follow the road to find something or someone.
