(4 - 8) Plage sauvage de Carteret

Invaded in June 1940, the towns of Carteret and Barneville-sur-Mer are major sites of the Atlantic Wall. Most of the fortifications are still visible with the exception of the site of Baubigny, completely buried in the sand.

It is also by the sky of Barneville-Carteret, that the C-47 planes transporting the airborne troops penetrated above French territory on the night of June 5 to 6, 1944.

Unlike the Longues-sur-Mer battery or the Pointe du Hoc battery, the fortifications built on Cape Carteret did not conform to the usual model of the Atlantic Wall and housed machine guns which protected the cannons installed on Barneville beach. On the cape, the Germans had therefore positioned anti-aircraft weapons, mortars and machine guns, thus using the former customs guardhouse as a fortification.
