CSS Hunley was a submarine built by the Confederacy in 1863, it used a hand-cranked propeller and was armed with a spar torpedo, which is a bomb on a pole. Hunley sank USS Housatonic, but went down with her most likely due to collateral damage; something that this submarine based on it reflects by the fact that the blast radius of it's spar torpedo is double the length of the submarine carrying it.

They found that the Hunley sank 2 miles away from the wreck of Housatonic with her crew still sitting at their posts, suggesting that the bomb or its shock wave had no effect on her sinking. The most likely story is that the crew simply ran out of breathable air....

I just wanna say that this workshop post got me to look up the CSS Hunley's story, and I spent the last half hour reading the Smithsonian article on what probably killed the crew. 30 mins well spent, thank you for that.
