It's annoying but they'll actually drop an item on the ground (usually a bear trap or water gun) with the string as a name, so just avoid those and it shouldn't affect gameplay. Worst case scenario you can also drop everything else and then bait a thief into taking it off your hands.
Obviously I still try to fix instances of this wherever I can, but some will probably slip into custom content from time to time so it seems worth pointing out what it is and how people can recognize and deal with it in the moment.
Might want to check its compatibility for non-CCU users.
Did this happen with or without the optional mods? If the latter it's also possible that some version of some mod had an obscure bug which failed the quest, I don't know of any at the moment but it's not impossible (like I think a version of roguelibs many months ago had some hacking related issues, but those should be long patched by now).
