Before the Cuban Revolution, it had been privately owned, but in 1959 it was nationalized.

In its interior, the great single space stands out, supported by columns with smooth and circular shafts, where all the functions are developed from counters and entrances as apses that border its perimeter to frame the different departments.
The property was rehabilitated in 2008 after suffering an unfortunate fire. The project was in charge of the architect Osmar Vasallo Cañizares.
