HMCS Montreal was the first ship of a pair of cruisers, built during an expansion of Canadian heavy cruisers in the first half of the 1920s to replace aging armored cruisers, along with the preceding Toronto class. The class was designed and built during a war between Canada and Germany in the mid 1920s, with Montreal and her sister Edmonton both completing in the summer of 1924.

They were designed to reach 28 knots and armed with 8 8" guns and 8 5" guns initially, later having her 5" guns replaced with 4" guns and receiving an aircraft catapult and AA upgrades.

These ships would serve throughout the years, receiving a number of upgrades during their lifetime.

Edmonton would survive the American-Canadian war of 1954-1957 but Montreal would not.
