I found the best thing to do was just spam guardhouses to slow down the goblins until your four heroes get there to respond to your bounties. I also got a Sorcerer's Abode set up for Change of Hear.
I think what would really improve the scenario is to change goblins spawning at the edge of the map to having smaller goblin lairs around and they spawn from there. If you clear all the lairs on one side, then you don't have to worry about it again and can focus on searching for the stronghold on a different side.
I'm not sure what I would rate this difficulty-wise compared to the original game. If you get good RNG, it's a high Advanced. If you get bad RNG, it's a high Expert like Valley of the Serpents.
