CA IJN Yamagara - Heavy Cruiser

Background History:

After the Allied defeat in WWII, a cold war between the two dominant victors, Japan and the German Reich emerged. In an effort to secure the place as global superpower, massive modernizations and investments were made to both nations´ navies, building larger ships with even larger cannons and aircraft compliments.

The IJN Yamagara is one of the first ships of the new, redesigned Zao-Class. These new, heavy cruisers were built to operate without larger ships involved and as command-ships for smaller battlegroups.
They were equipped with an effective RADAR array for detection and large rangefinders for fire-control. Floatplane catapults were also installed, make the Yamagara able to launch up to three spotting aircraft.

The Zao-Class is armed with main battery comprising twelve 203mm autoloaded cannon-turrets in four mounts.
Her secondary armament is made up of eight dual 100mm dual-purpose-cannons, able to deliver heavy fire to air and sea targets.
Complementing her artillery prowess are the four quad-torpedo-launchers carrying powerful 610mm long-lance torpedos mounted aftwards in the hull.
The AA-armament was also considerably reinforced compared to early designs, now counting 22 40mm Bofors cannons and 65 25mm machine guns. Together with the DP-Artillery, the Zao-Class is able to repel major air assault on its own and effectively protect allied targets.

The heavy armament and fast speed of up to 37 knots however come at the price of low maneuverability and significant vulnerabilities in her otherwise quite respectable armor belt and massive construction and maintenance costs. For example, the ship has no torpedo belt, making close engagements very dangerous.
