As mentioned before, while it's not necessary, I prefer driving with the Aerodynamic Physics mod by @DraygoKorvan and @Shaostoul:

For more than 2 carriages, it's recommended that you add a caboose (break car) to the end. With it connected, it enables the "Throttle" and "Reverse Throttle" (hotbar 2). These are effectively the break controls for the caboose. Increasing the throttle allows you to smoothly move forward, reducing the throttle to 0 enables the inertial damping on the caboose, bringing the train to a stop. The Reverse Throttle works similarly, but for reverse.


I did originally try using @Whiplash141's subgrid thruster control, but I need to work on the configuration values more before I'm happy releasing it*.


Slot 9 on hotbar 1 toggles "boost", which turns off a few forward thrusters so you don't speed off accidentally when you're without carriages. You'll want to turn this on if you're coupled to carriages.


For corners, I recommend going between 16 and 25m/s, any higher and you're likely to derail, and slower may get the train stuck on the corner.


*Because the thrusters would be facing either side relative to the locomotive when going around a corner, the thrusters would act against the train unless you hold A/D, otherwise, they make driving quite easy.
