Read this out of curiosity, as one of the most memorable early events of my first playthrough was a base defense mission where my solely assault rifle -equipped troops got massacred and the base destroyed since I simply couldn't deal enough damage to take out hostiles... My tactics were at fault, too, not knowing how to effectively apply the weaponry I had. In this case I solved it with brute force: The next time I got a base defense, still at an early point in the game and armed with starter weapons, but now a mix of LMGs, precision rifles and rocket launchers! Sure, I lost a couple of soldiers as my overwatch/reaction fire was poor, but at least I could finally murder everything in sight as soon as I got the chance to fire. ^-^
