Here's a common misconception about the weapon:
A lot of people think that the design means that one can punch, shoot, and stab, all at the same time. In reality, the gun was not designed for this. The knife was intended to be deployed only when being used as a set of brass knuckles, as seen in this drawing:

It was a cruddy weapon. Good for punching, yes, but outside of close range the gun was almost worthless. Not only did it lack a front and rear sight, but it also lacked a barrel. This means that the 7mm cartridge (which already lacks power) loses even more power, as the propellant has an easier time escaping when firing. It also lacked a safety, or even a trigger guard.

Ah, yes, the seemingly innovative weapon that turned out be literal trash. And as Floof stated, this is based on a real world weapon: no barrel meant the rounds couldn’t get far, something about the knife not being strong enough.

Almost any weapon item that ends up with a mod download seem to get an enhancement version from you. atleast you give them more features.
