The Punished is a character that explores Isaac's trauma, his internalized guilt of perceived "sins", the pain and destruction that guilt can inflict, and the memories that have been forgotten.

The tainted version brings that to the next level: The character is suffering from flashbacks as Isaac's memories start to haunt everyone around him.



The Punished is a blindfolded character that relies on explosive ghosts summoned by Purgatory rifts to deal damage. Pretty simple at first glance, the Liberation pocket active offers a ton of complexity due to its dual design - it's the key to mastering both combat and exploration as The Punished. With enough practice and a bit of luck, you'll have free curse rooms, free secret rooms, and a relatively easy Perfection.

Both the regular and the tainted version put huge emphasis on exploration and movement. Thanks to their pocket actives, each version has its own unique way to explore the world around it. At the same time, each version has a unique way of dictating your movement in combat, forcing you to play around their needs while you need to dodge everything the game throws at you.

It might seem like this is a challenge character at first, but I can assure you it gets quite easy and even more fun once you get the hang of it. I'm obviously biased but once The Punished was ready, it quickly became my favorite character. I hope it brings you joy as well.

Finally, both the regular and the tainted version of The Punished are designed to be played with one hand, partially to include one-handed players and partially because I just enjoy laying on my side and playing this.



Much like The Forgotten does with bone hearts, The Punished focuses on cracked keys and Ultra Secret rooms. In the unlocks you'll find:

• 2 new ways of getting cracked keys (a red beggar and a boss/shop/secret room item)
  
• 4 new Ultra Secret Room items of Quality 4, with 2 of them being exclusive to that pool.
  
• A new card that sends you to a Purgatory red deal room, defying the choice between angels and devils.
  
• A new trinket that reveals the outlines of red doors.

If you only want to do few, I recommend doing Hush and Beast as the regular Punished. Those will unlock the Locked Memories item and the Red Beggar, respectively. Also, grab a cracked key while going to the beast, cause you'll need to unlock the tainted version as well.



The Punished has full support for External Item Descriptions (EID) and Encyclopedia, as well as the appropriate metadata for POG for good items or Specialist for good items. You can track your progress with any mods that allow it, such as Encyclopedia or Achievements for modded characters.

If you're a youtuber, you can find images to use as thumbnails in the "YouTube Thumbnails" folder inside the mod's files.




I am the sole creator of this mod, but I wouldn't be able to do any of it without the Modding of Isaac discord, the community documentation on the modding API, and Lytebringr's tutorials on YouTube.
