1) If you want the sphere gone entirely (so you can use the Tabletop Simulator background interface), just delete the control panel (and it'll automatically clean up the sphere).
2) Or, you can use the control panel to manage your custom images. To do so, right-click the control panel (not on any of the buttons), and into the Description field (bottom of the tooltip), paste the link to your background image. Then, click the Background button (mountain icon). That'll set the background). Then, right-click the control panel again and type a name for your background. Finally, make sure you're set to the Group in which you want to save the new button (using the single-arrow icons), and then click the Save button (disk icon).
If you get lost, this mod's instructions have some help, as do the various buttons on the control panel (right-click them and they'll put help text into the chat). You can also post here.
I hope that helps!
From your posts, I'm not sure I understood which part of the process is proving difficult. What you said is correct: right-click the control panel, paste the link to the HDRI image in the Description, then press the Background button. After that, make lighting changes that you would like (via the Options button at the top of the screen, in the Lighting section). When you're done, right-click the control panel again, type a name into the Description, then click the Save button.
