More enemy variety. There are several plant-themed ones: dryads, daemonwoods, and strangleflowers. Those would be a great alternative to ratmen, ratmen, and more ratmen.

Speaking of which, multiplying strangleweed would be a good thematic option. Maybe every two days, one gets generated adjacent to certain types of lairs? And one daemonwood every ten? This would thematically be "plants going out of control" if you leave them alone too long, but wouldn't cause a stalemate since destroying the lair would get rid of them for good.

Another thematic idea: have the botanists cast vines every few days on hero

Lair respawning is the biggest cause of stalemate since it undoes all progress. I'd be interested in just dropping it in favor of the plant-themed changes above. If they must stay, make the respawn rules clearer and add it to the description.

Finally, I noticed that when you do "Continue Playing", the towers all respawn. I think that's a bug.
Not helping was that I was playing with no mods and got hit with the ratman plague. I need to remember to turn that off.
Eventually I could break through and take out a botanist, but that was few and far between and there were four of them. By day 100 or so I finally managed to take out the last one.
I think it's an interesting idea, but the difficulty curve isn't quite there yet.
