The Gothic II modification Battle of the Kings presents to the esteemed Gothic-player a new way of playing and experiencing the game.

In this modification there are two hostile groups fighting with each other. Both camps have one king each, who can be attacked and killed. To reach the enemy king, both camps must hack their way through the enemy soldiers. Both teams can improve their soldiers and, for example by building and using a smithy, also improve their weapons and armor. They also can hire attacking mages and let one mage research further improvements.

The task of the player is to command one of the two camps and vanquish the other one by killing the enemy king. The player character cannot fight himself and is also not going to be attacked.
