La locomotiva Gr 480 era una macchina a vapore surriscaldato, mossa da due cilindri a semplice espansione. Questa locomotiva era la terza per potenza nella classifica italiana, grazie ai 1500cv sviluppati a 40km/h.
Venne appositamente studiata per andare a sostituire le ormai vetuste locomotive Austriache BBÖ 580, utilizzate sulla linea del Brennero e rimaste in suolo Italiano come bottino di guerra (in seguito alla prima guerra mondiale): dovendone seguire l'impostazione progettuale, il rodiggio scelto fu 1-5-0, con carrello italiano frontale.
In seguito all'elettrificazione in trifase della stessa linea, le venti locomotive 480 vennero sparse lungo la penisola, terminando il servizio operativo nel 1968.

L'unico esemplare superstite alle demolizioni è la 480.017, custodita all'interno del museo nazionale di Pietrarsa.

The Gr 480 locomotive was a superheated steam engine powered by two simple expansion cylinders. This locomotive was the third for power in the Italian ranking, thanks to the 1500hp developed at 40km/h.
It was specially designed to replace the obsolete Austrian BBÖ 580 locomotives, used on the Brenner line and remained on Italian soil as war booty after ww1. Due to the design approach that had to be similar to the austrian locs, the wheel arrangement chosen was 1-5-0, with frontal Italian landing gear.
After the three-phase electrification of the same line, the twenty 480 locomotives were scattered along the peninsula, ending their operational service in 1968.
The only surviving locomotive is the 480.017, kept inside the national museum of Pietrarsa.
