History:
In the Iron Age the area occupied by present-day Helsinki was inhabited by Tavastians. They used the area for fishing and hunting, but due to a lack of archeological finds it is difficult to say how extensive their settlements were. Swedes colonized the coastline of the Helsinki region in the late 13th century after the successful Second Crusade to Finland, which led to the defeat of the Tavastians. Helsinki was founded under the name "Helsingfors" in 1550 by Gustavus Vasa, King of Sweden, in order to compete with Reval (currently Tallinn, the capital of Estonia), then a flourishing Hanseatic city. The city was burned down and occupied by the Russians at war with the Swedes during the Great Northern War between 1713 and 1721, and again in 1742. After Sweden's defeat in its war against Russia of 1808-1809, Finland is annexed to the Russian Empire. Helsingfors became on April 8, 1812 then the capital of an autonomous grand duchy, and therefore experienced considerable development. In 1917, with the independence of Finland, Helsinki becomes the new official name of the city which is also capital of the new republic.
