The socialist government of President Ebert concludes an agreement with the army to quell the revolt in blood. On January 8, KPD members quit the Revolutionary Action Committee after USPD representatives invited Friedrich Ebert to negotiations. As these began, the workers discovered the existence of a leaflet from the Vorwärts entitled “Die Stunde der Abrechnung naht! (“The hour of reckoning is approaching!”), and learn that the SPD administration has hired Freikorps to counter the workers' revolt. Friedrich Ebert indeed gave this order to Defense Minister Gustav Noske on January 6th. The revolutionary action committee then stopped its discussions with the SPD, and the Spartacist League called on its members to take up arms.

The same day, Friedrich Ebert orders the Freikorps to attack the rebellious workers. The militia is made up of former soldiers who participated in the First World War who still have their weapons, which gives them a formidable advantage. The Freikorps therefore quickly reconquer the streets blocked by barricades and the occupied buildings.
