History:
Of Roman origin, Pompaelo was founded around 75 BC. AD by Pompey who would have given it its name. It was occupied by the Visigoths in 476. In the 8th century, the Moors occupied the city. They were driven out in 778 with the help of Charlemagne's troops, who took advantage of the weakness of his allies to dismantle their ramparts. In revenge, the Vascons contribute to the crushing of the rearguard of the imperial armies at the Col de Roncesvalles during the Battle of Roncesvalles. The kingdom of Pamplona, established in 905, was the nucleus of that of Navarre. Throughout the Middle Ages, the life of the city will be disturbed by struggles between the inhabitants, partisans of the alliance with Castile, or favorable to the maintenance of the Navarrese crown under a French dynasty. These conflicts did not slow down the development generated by the passage of the pilgrims. For some supporters of Basque nationalism, Pamplona is the historic capital of Euskal Herria (the "Basque country").
