Well concerning the materials, you have to be aware that adding a single layer of armor on a sv won't help much against anyting that is powerful enough to get through your shields in the first place.
If you want to tank on armor, you have to add a lot of it. If you do that, the ship will no longer be a quick fighter, but a slow one. My Harrow MK2 for example follows that idea.
The Icarus here is a shield fighter that only has a bare minimum of armor, and changing the thin hull it has to combat steel will not save you. If your Shield is gone, you're dead. Easy as that.
It allows the ship to be as mobile as it is, but that´s the price you pay for the mobility. The bigger issue (than the choice of material) is really that it isn't yet updated for the new shield upgrades. That's still on the todo list.
