You can over-wright it though with classnames for w/e units from w/e mods you want.
Also you can use the server settings (Vandeanson's Apocalypse) to overwrite what the mission has for NPC spawns so if you want less or more or entirely different units spawning around you it should work.
You can get navigation tools from dead soldiers (NATO / RU). Food/Water/Tools you can get from armed civilians (Renegades). Lots of the common stuff can be sold.
