KENTA had already built quite a name for himself before joining WWE's NXT brand as Hideo Itami. Expectations were high thanks to his exposure in NOAH and ROH.

KENTA won both the GHC Junior Heavyweight Champion and the GHC Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Titles three times before moving up to the heavyweight division. He captured the GHC Heavyweight Championship in 2013.

In Ring of Honor, he competed in memorable matches with Bryan Danielson, Nigel McGuinness, and Davey Richards, among others.
