Styrian Offensive (alt. 1944)

It is September 1944 and the Third Reich is doomed. Romania has switched sides, the partisans have liberated Belgrade, the Russian bear storms towards Budapest and the British 8th Army has done the unthinkable and penetrated almost 200 miles from Trieste to Graz. As the clock winds down on the war, OKW decides to commit to one last great offensive in the Balkans, determined to reverse two years of failure.

In their incorrigible advance on Austria the British 8th has left their flank exposed, if only for the moment - the US 5th has been racing from Piedmont to share some of the glory and will no doubt secure the supply line from Italy in a matter of days. Recognising this, OKW sends General Fretter-Pico's 6th Army panzers from Budapest to strike at this exposed line of supply before it's too late. He will be supported by the annihilated 10th Army under von Vietinghoff and the relatively unscathed Hungarian 1st under the untrustworthy General Miklós. Meanwhile, the few remaining Croatian loyalists of the NDH are under serious pressure from multiple partisan uprisings - it won't be long until Tito gets here and when he does, the Balkans will be lost.

The task ahead of you is near impossible; the British 8th might be the most elite army in the world having known nothing but victory since El Alamein and your own supply is already at a breaking point due to the aforementioned partisans. And yet, this last offensive in southern Europe could encircle and destroy an entire army and give enough elbow room to turn and face the oncoming Soviets. There is no time to prepare; you must strike immediately!


(This scenario is based off the a-historical path the Mediterranean theatre takes in the 'Victory in the West' campaign. It is set between the scenarios 'Ljubljana Gap' and 'Final Vienna Award' and takes a look at a possible German counterattack during the rest period British 8th takes in September of 1944. I had a lot of fun making this scenario as its been an idea floating around the back of my head for a while - the recent Stalingrad dlc announcement got me motivated to make it! Don't expect another scenario from me for a little while as I plan to take a little break and let my brain rest. Once again, thank you 2x2 Games for making such a masterpiece game!
