History:
Sarajevo as we know it today was founded by the Ottoman Empire in the 1450s following the conquest of the region. Sarajevo flourished in the 16th century and became known for its large markets and numerous mosques, which numbered around 100 by the middle of the 16th century. Towards the end of the 17th century, Sarajevo was the most important city in the Balkans after Constantinople. The end of the Ottoman era in the history of Sarajevo begins with the end of the Austro-Ottoman War. During the military occupation of Bosnia-Herzegovina by Austria-Hungary in 1878, the capture of Sarajevo was the subject of violent street fighting. The city fell after nineteen days of fighting, and the massive use of artillery. On June 28, 1914, while Bosnia and Herzegovina had been occupied since 1878, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was preparing to inherit the Austro-Hungarian Empire, came to the capital with his wife for an official visit. Both are assassinated in full procession by a Bosnian Serb student, Gavrilo Princip. This attack was a prelude to the First World War. After the war, Sarajevo was integrated into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (the country of the South Slavs), as the capital of the province of Drina Banovina. After World War II, Sarajevo became the capital of the Republic of Bosnia in the Socialist Federation of the Republic of Yugoslavia. The modern history of Sarajevo begins with the declaration of independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The next three years made Sarajevo the center of the longest siege in modern military history.
