The problem is that until you have researched the technology, you cannot turn off the automatic mode. Simply because there is no button on the interface yet.
It would be logical that the automatic mode be turned off by default. As for all other rovers. And you COULD turn it on after researching the technology.
Or so that the mode switch button is always available, regardless of the technology, and you COULD , if necessary, turn off the automatic mode.
This would allow you to control the rovers and load them onto the asteroid shuttles without turning off the mod.
