With or without long times I think the Patron's influence should reflect his/her leadership ability. This then could be used to make research buildings that could have scholars/scientist to eventually research more then one at a time.

this actually breaks the game because you arent getting to the required research fast enough (f.ex. you cant craft luxury items for the people until loong after they already revolt)
