History:
Ekven is an archaeological site located in Russia in the far east of Siberia in the Chukotka Autonomous District. There is an ancient Eskimo cemetery there, dating back 2,000 years to the days of the Ancient Bering Sea Culture. In particular, there was a tomb made of wood, stones and whalebones. The grave contained the remains of an old woman with a wooden mask. After reconstitution of the burial it was established that the tomb represented the interior of a whale. Ekven is one of the most important archaeological sites in the region along with the site of Ipiutak. The discoveries made there have brought a more precise vision of the Ancient Culture of the Bering Sea. Thus several tombs of female shamans have been discovered there. These women had an important spiritual role in these northern regions. Old Bering Sea is an archaeological culture associated with a distinctive, elaborate circle and dot aesthetic style and is centered on the Bering Strait region; no site is more than 1 km from the ocean. Old Bering Sea is considered, following Henry B. Collins, the initial phase of the Northern Maritime tradition. Despite its name, several Old Bering Sea sites lie on the Chukchi Sea. The origins of Old Bering Sea remains poorly known, although its chronology can be tentatively established from several localities across Bering Strait. The earliest materials termed Old Bering Sea are dated before 400 BC from mortuary remains at Ekven. The peak of the culture was between 200 and 600 AD, although no firm chronology is yet well-accepted by researchers. The Old Bering Sea culture is believed to have developed into the Punuk culture in Siberia and to the Birnirk culture in north Alaska. The Old Bering Sea culture is also considered the earliest indication of the Thule culture.
