Merchant Marine: Fly Casual

Merchant Marine: Fly Casual was inspired by Space Opera and Western tales, small ships with small crews up against the universe. But has since broadened to include a larger number of changes to base ST:F gameplay. The mod aims to increase the options players have, while fundamentally retaining the gameplay of ST:F.

Merchant Marine: Fly Casual is currently under development and welcomes discussion. The SQL instructions are included and documented, so feel free to use them to understand how to do your own modding.

Priority Suggestion
Mechant Marine: Fly Casual uses SQL to modify all existing entities that meet the requirements. It should be applied after all other data modifying mods.

Development Goals
  • Keep the spirit of ST:F
  • Increase the player's emotional connection to their crew, by decreasing the size of crew and making each crew member count
  • Enable smaller ships to be viable during the late game
  • Reduce the necessity of the Ship Combat Dodge Meta
  • Decrease the tedium of Crew Combat
  • Add convenience functions for smoother gameplay
  • Extend STF where there are gaps

*** See the Change Notes for latest changes and details ***

Merchant Marine is broken up into several component mods allowing player discretion in what changes are enabled. Make sure to install and activate the other desired component mods. See the Merchant Marine Collection.
  • Merchant Marine: Fly Casual - The main mod. It contains general fixes and new Xeno ships.
  • Merchant Marine: Equipment - Contains new and rebalanced gear, armor, and weapons.
  • Merchant Marine: Professions - Contains new professions, job and talent rebalancing.
  • Merchant Marine: Assistant - Contains a contact with cheating and game testing abiltiies.
  • Merchant Marine: Smaller Crews - Contains the FireFly Style Gameplay changes.
  • Recolored MapMarks - Recolors planet icons on the sector and galaxy maps.

Noteable Change List
  • Improved Crew Combat value for: Pistoler, Bodyguard, Military Officer, and Blade Dancer
  • Crew Combat: Boarding Strategies are more likely to be able to end combat without killing everyone on the ship.
  • Increased Smaller Ship viability: Smaller ships gain larger combat dice pools against large ships.
  • New Components: Signal Bloomers increase your chance of encounters during travel.
  • Component Changes: Weapon Lockers reduce Morale damage. Medical Bays reduce Crew damage.
  • Engine Rebalance: The Longhaul produces only 6 RP per turn. The Balanced Engine is now a more competitve choice.
  • FireFly Style Gameplay: *Optional* Gameplay variant for smaller crews. It allows ships more officers and components provide more officers.
  • Early Xeno Escape: Lowered Engineer All The Power from 15 to 8. It is an earlier escape option than Skip Off the Void.
  • Terrox Carriers: Terrox have been given two carrier variants.
  • Ripcord: The Ripcord talent is now available to all combat crew. It will let you escape from combat with a wounded crew person instead of chancing the death save.
  • Low Value Trade Goods: Supply and Demand drastically increased for low value trade goods.
  • Gear Refinement: Low level gear is more specialized. Ammo/Edge Gear provide more damage and increases in matching accuracy type. HeadSets provide more accuracy for both melee and ranged attacks.
  • Ship Weapon Specialization: Autocannons function as effective C-TAK alternatives for Craft Defense. Plasma Cannons are now even more lethal to crew and components AND less effective against hulls.
  • Cargo Hold Balance: Cargo Hold Capacity increased by 5. Allows the player to do starting cargo missions with a single large cargo bay.
  • Economic Good Scaling: More supply and demand of low value goods (and Power Generators).
  • New weapons: Shock Stunner offhand, Greatswords, Plasma Sniper Rifles, Assault Snubbers.
  • Weapon Extension: All weapons lines are now available for levels 4-10. Levels 4-6 are available from Contacts, 6-7 from Salvage, and 7-10 from Relics.
  • Armor and Weapon Rebalance: All armor and weapons are rebalanced to be standardized and scale linearly without changing initiative costs or penalties.

Does this mod still work with the newest updates?

re:Economy - You are correct. Those entries are redundant.
re:Mod Structure - Yeah. I'd love it if there was a more sophisticated interface for each component in a mod, but we only get some rather brute force tools.

From the change list, are these two just repetitions of each other? In any case, trading in early game is now fun and profitable, but not too profitable. Without the mod I found it a chore. Good job again!

Low Value Trade Goods: Supply and Demand drastically increased for low value trade goods.

Economic Good Scaling: More supply and demand of low value goods (and Power Generators).

Thanks, that was my fault as I didn't understand that the mod was broken up into smaller mods. Really enjoying the smaller crew - it has brought me back to the game after giving up on it. Nice job!

It should be. The ships requires you to download the Smaller Crew portion of the mod. The easiest way is to grab everything in the collection: https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/workshop/filedetails/?id=2689155775
Alternatively, you can grab just the Smaller ships: https://psteamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2856946970

There are 4 specifically designed small ships (Corvette, Stiletto, Isabel, Quillion). They required Rank C in ships. All other starting ships will have their officer quota increased, but for maximum compatibility with existing game functions, the crew limits are unchanged.

Is this mod still working? I only see starting ships with 20+ crew members and no small crew options.

The changes in low value trade goods really made trading more interesting. cheers!

Yes. In general if you auto'd before you'll be fine. The most noticeable change would be smaller AI ships will be a harder fight than you'd expect compared to regular STF.
NECEROS 2023 年 8 月 21 日 上午 2:42
Do the combat changes effect how the AI character fights, too? I tend to just auto that.

That is my code. The error is a primary key uniqueness failure. In short, every row's index field in an SQL table must have a unique value. Somewhere, most likely in the changes you are experimenting with, there is an another entry to the effect table that has the _id value of 26001. This is colliding with the original effect I added to the Advancing Front skill in the professions mod. Given the unlikeliness of another mod using the 26000 range for changes, I suspect that you were experimenting with that particular code and didn't change the index. If it was a inconsistency in the mod, then it would be failing for everyone. The lack of ongoing complaints supports this.

I'd encourage you to join the Trese Brother's discord and modding channel there.

Lastly, welcome to the club and have fun. I look forward to hearing about your expertiments.
