Norfolk Southern SD70 No. 2542

(Requires Halton's EMD SD70 Mega Pack).

The basic SD70 was the first / namesake engine of the SD70 series. It was the only member of its family to feature a ‘standard-cab’ (as far as I know, all other SD70 variants have ‘comfort-cabs’). 122 of these locomotives were built between 1992 and 1994, and Norfolk Southern was one of four companies to order SD70s.

In the specific case of NS 2542, she was built in 1994 and entered service in September that year. She ran in service for 25 years, and - in 2019 - she was taken to Progress Rail’s works in Mayfield, Kentucky and rebuilt as SD70ACC No. 1823. The rebuilt NS 2542 is still in service today, and is now 27 years old.

For reference, Norfolk Southern originally had eighty SD70s, but only 52 of them have been rebuilt as SD70ACCs. The remainder are stored out of service.

(At some point, I will make a re-skin of NS 1823, so that way we'll have both versions of this engine; original SD70 and rebuilt SD70ACC).
