This mod allows effects to cast light on ships, even when lit by sunlight. Have a look at the video.

This works by adding a second, hidden sun in all solar systems to force Nexus to use more than one light source.
It is a well known trick that was first posted on the official forum way back. Unable to track down the original author, I will credit a post from arpaso.de since it's the oldest reference I could find.

Notes:
- Atrox being a two star system already, it was not edited. Effects will only cast light on ships lit by a single sun.
- It is obviously not compatible with other mods that edit the vanilla solar systems. You would need to make the edit yourself in the mod files.
- You may need to start over your campaign since I think the systems files are not reloaded after a campaign has started.
