NE 81 DMU (DB Br 626)

Developed by Orenstein & Koppel for various private railways as alternative to the Class 627/628 DMUs, the vehicle was required to have the capability to haul 400 tons of cargo and was mostly employed on secondary and branch lines where mixed traffic was/is still in operation. The result was the NE 81, which has been produced in 4 batches by DUEWAG and Waggon Union. Unpowered units were also built to allow cheaper increases of capacity. Depicted in this mod are the later variants which are capable of 100 kph.

When DB received 5 units after a merger, they were designated as Class 626. The high floor and lack of AC has seen them withdrawn more and more, but they are still used for mixed traffic and for construction work as well as on a few private lines.
