Want to play the game at a better resolution and reduce the unused space on your screen? Here's a quick and easy way to fix that.

Find the Alone in the Dark folder on your PC
The Steam folder should be under your system files (x86).

Open the steam folder and then locate the steamapps folder and then click into the common folder.

Once there, you should be able to find a folder titled "Alone in the Dark 1."

Open that folder.

Good job.
Find the resolution preset and change it.
The folder contents should look like this:

From here you can click on the file "dosboxAlone1.conf" and the file should open in the form of a user-friendly notepad document. How convenient.

The file should look like this:

Do you see where it says "fullresolution=original?" Change that to say either fullresolution=1080 or fullresolution=1600 depending on the resolution that works best for you and your pc.

[note: I have tried to run it at 1920 but dosbox, the emulator that this port of Alone in the Dark runs on, seemed to have some trouble with that setting for me, but feel free to try it if you'd like. Maybe it was an issue on my end, but I am unable to confirm this as I don't have other PC's to test with]

Before closing the file, be sure to save it by clicking file in the upper left corner of the window and then selecting save from the drop down menu.

Congrats! If you've followed these steps correctly then you should be running it at an improved resolution with reduced black bars. While this game is old enough that improved resolutions are not a massive glow up, it is still good to have any improvements at all to this old gem. Below is a visual comparison of the resolutions so you know what to expect (it is more noticable when loading them up and changing them from original to one of the others, I promise):

ORIGINAL

1080

1600
(update) What if you want to run the game at a higher resolution in windowed mode?
Simple! Find the previous file:

Now find where it says "fullscreen=true" and change it to "fullscreen=false."

We aren't done though, as we also need to up the resolution so you don't have to squint at the tiny window.

Go to "windowresolution=" and change it's value to say "windowresolution=1600x900," or whatever resolution works well for you. If you go with my suggestion the window size should look like this, depending on your system's own resolution/screen zoom.

Unseen, when people say "stretched" they talk about proportions.. what that has to do with pixels and ugliness? Did I misunderstand anything?

I would also really like to play this stretched. I'm kinda getting sick of hearing people say it'll look stretched. I play wizadry 6 stretched and I think it looks awesome. Some of us appreciate oldschool pixel graphics. Plus this game looks amazing for 1992. I don't sit close to my pc or tv I like to sit back and relax and having to squint at a narrow screen isn't fun. I really wish people would quit saying it'll look stretched and ugly you're not missing anything.

Montoya I found the command output so I just write opengl?

I am using memory, haven't done this for a long time, but if you want to play stretched, you need to edit the dosbox.conf file for this game.
The first thing is to make sure the output= line is openGL or any other method (all the options are specified in the comments). surface won't do
Then there is another line where you can tell to stretch. Sorry that I can't remember, but as said, the conf file is well documented and it is easy to see what and where to change.

How can I stretch the image? Now I have black bars on the sides. I know that is how it was meant to be but I'd like to know how to play it stretched anyways.
