Expand the Edmonton LRT, one of Canada's pioneers in rail transit.

Beginning construction in 1974 and entering service in 1978, the Edmonton LRT is Western Canada's oldest transit system, and one of the first modern light rail systems in North America. Its light rail route was inspired by the subway lines of Toronto and Montréal, as well as existing rail lines in Europe and the US.

For most of its lifespan, the LRT has operated on a single route, now known as the Capital Line (blue). Expansion is underway: the secondary Metro Line (red) opened in 2015, while the under-construction Valley Line (green) is projected to open in the next few years. Plans for future development include extensions of the Capital and Metro Lines as well as two additional routes, the Energy Line (purple) and the Festival Line (gold). On average, the LRT currently serves 110,000 riders daily, with a large increase expected upon completion of the Valley Line.
