2001年4月1日，美国EP-3侦察机在中国海南岛附近海域上空侦查，中国海军航空兵派出2架歼-8II战斗机进行监视和拦截，其中一架僚机在中国海南岛东南70海里的中国专属经济区上空与美军飞机发生碰撞，中国战斗机坠毁，飞行员王伟跳伞下落不明，后被中国确认牺牲。而美国军机则未经允许迫降海南岛陵水机场。

中美双方就事件责任僵持不下，更演变成为了一场外交危机。经过政治角力，事件最终以美国发表一段含糊其辞的“道歉”，中国释放人员、交还飞机告终。

On April 1, 2001, the U.S. EP-3 reconnaissance plane conducted reconnaissance over the sea area near Hainan Island of China. Chinese Navy Aviation sent two J-8II fighters to monitor and intercept. One of the wingmen collided with the U.S. plane over the exclusive economic zone of China 70 nautical miles southeast of Hainan Island of China. The Chinese fighter plane crashed and the pilot Wang Wei parachuted missing. Later, he was confirmed dead by China . The US military plane landed at Lingshui airport on Hainan island without permission.
The standoff between China and the United States over the responsibility of the incident has turned into a diplomatic crisis. After political wrestling, the incident ended with the US issuing a vague "apology" and China releasing personnel and returning the plane.
