FS Gr 740, 741, 743 and 940 Locomotives

La locomotiva Gr 740 è stata una macchina iconica nel parco rotabili FS dell'epoca. E' una diretta evoluzione del gruppo 730, locomotiva piuttosto semplice con rodiggio 1 - 4 - 0 e cilindri esterni. Rispetto al gruppo predecessore, tale locomotiva presentava un aumento di potenza di circa 80cv ed un peso assiale contenuto in 14 t, cosa che le permetteva di percorrere tratti di linea ferroviaria dissestati.
La Gr 940 altro non è che una rielaborazione della 740 per integrare il tender nel telaio stesso della locomotiva. Rispetto alla 740, presenta un asse aggiuntivo nel sottotelaio posteriore per permettere una migliore iscrizione in curva quando essa marcia in retrocessione. Le casse con i serbatoi dell'acqua sono state installate di fianco alla caldaia, conferendo alla locomotiva un look tipicamente Germanico.
Negli anni 50 sono stati installati dei pre-riscaldatori Franco-Crosti per permettere un migliore rendimento della locomotiva ed un minore aumento di potenza. La 743 rappresenta la versione con preriscaldatori installati sui fianchi della locomotiva; la 741 è la versione con preriscaldatore unico, montato sotto alla caldaia, con pari prestazioni alla 743. Entrambe le versioni presentano dei caratteristici tubi di scappamento con uscita sulla fiancata della locomotiva

The Gr 740 locomotive was an iconic machine in the FS. It is a direct evolution of the 730 group, a rather simple locomotive with 1 - 4 - 0 running gear and external cylinders. Compared to the predecessor group, this locomotive had an increase in power of about 80hp and an axial weight contained in 14 t, which allowed it to travel along bumpy sections of the railway line.
The Gr 940 is nothing more than a reworked 740, to integrate the tender into the chassis of the locomotive. Compared to the 740, it has an additional axle in the rear subframe to allow better cornering when it goes backwards. The crates with the water tanks were installed around the boiler, giving the locomotive a typically German look.
In the 1950s Franco-Crosti pre-heaters were installed to allow better performance of the locomotive and a lower increase in power. The 743 represents the version with preheaters installed on the sides of the locomotive; the 741 is the version with a single pre-heater, mounted under the boiler, with the same performance as the 743. Both versions have characteristic exhaust pipes with an outlet on the side of the locomotive
