The elektrische divisie had a bit of a problem. Certain parts of their network had to use third rail power instead of pantographs. Most of their locomotives did not have the capacity for this. They ended up making special power cars with third rail pick-ups so they didn't need to worry about converting their entire fleet with third rail pick-ups. Some of them had limited battery power, meant for use purely in yards. These were usually made with whatever disused locomotives were laying around. Some (like this one) had were painted for passenger operations.
