History:
The period between 1000 and 1200 AD AD knows important upheavals in the human geography and the cultural composition of Guyanas. From 1100 apr. J. - C., appears a completely original culture, known under the name of Koriabo. Its origin remains uncertain, the Middle Amazon or even the center of the Guyanas. It manifests itself on the banks of the main rivers and gradually spreads northward down the streams. While Koriabo's progress can be followed from the interior towards the coast, this population remains little known. Indeed, many Koriabo sites are located on the same site as previous sites of different cultures. The Koriabo culture is, however, unique because it represents the only truly Guyanese cultural ensemble, perhaps of local origin, which is not recognized outside this region. In fact, it manifests itself simultaneously and well identified throughout the Guyanas, from the Oyapock to the Orinoco, and from the center of the Guyanas to the coast. Furthermore, the truly remarkable aspect of Koriabo culture is its stylistic unity in ceramic forms and decorations throughout this immense region. In Guyana, the only carbon-14 dating of the Koriabo complex, obtained on charcoal collected in Mapaou, in the lower Approuague, places this site between 1520 and 1800 AD. The lower Approuague map of 1764, drawn up by Dessingy, indicating an old Akokwa village on the site of the Mapaou site, the calibration between 1744 and 1801 is the most likely. We can even tighten this range towards its lower limit, that is to say the middle of the eighteenth century. This age, the only one in the Guyanas which safely places the Koriabo complex in colonial times, is therefore important for an adjustment of the final dating of this complex, which until then has been poorly established, and we believe that it represents very probably one of the last Koriabo occupations in Guyana.
